How will I know when to replace my water pump?
Q:
How will I know when to replace my water pump?
A:
A water pump will give you certain signs to let you know it is
on the way out and needs to be replaced. It is always best to be
proactive and replace the pump before it dies so, you are not without water to your home or business.
Things to look for:
Is the pump very rusty?
Is the pump leaking?
Is the pump squealing?
Is the pump kicking on and off constantly?
Is the pump running for a long time before shutting off?
If your pump looks like it needs to be replaced, it may need to be
replaced, especially if, it is very rusted. If it looks real bad on
the outside, it may look worse on the inside. Remember, your water is
flowing through that pump. Cast iron pumps will rust as soon as the
protective paint or other liner has worn away. Your water will then
contact the metal directly and if it is rusting, the iron content of
the water will increase.
If your pump looks like this, it may be time for a new pump.
We were shocked the pump, pictured above was still working at all
but, in a way, we are not. That is a Sta-rite pump and that is why we
sell them. They last a long time; maybe a little too long. However,
we do not sell pumps that are constructed of cast iron. The pumps we
sell have a composite housing and impeller which, will not rust and
induce iron into the water. When we tested the water for iron
content, it was at 3.5 parts per million (PPM).
This customer now has a nice new Sta-rite pump with, a composite
housing so, rusting will not be a problem. After replacing the pump,
the water tested at 1 PPM of iron. So, the old pump was adding 2.5
PPM of iron into the water. Just by replacing the pump, the water is
much cleaner than it was!
New water pump installed.
